EarthWorm JIM (Rus. “Jim Chervyak”) is a popular series of computer games about an earthen worm named Jim, the first part of which was released in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive console. We bring to your attention five interesting facts about the cult video game and its no less cult hero.

When creating the Jim Worm, they were inspired by the “Ninja Turtles” and Sonic the Hedgehog

PlayMates Toys, in the future, the publisher of the game about the “Jim worm”, released a successful series of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA Turtles and wanted to create its own franchise. At the same time, PlayMates planned to start a ladder with a video game, so that, then, using the popularity of the latter, to raise toys sales. At that time, Sonic the Hedgehog was very popular (the sequel had already come out by that time), which also inspired PlayMates: if it were not for the success of Sonic, it was quite possible that the Jim Chervyk would only be known as a toy figure.

The basic sketches of the worm, Jim, created designer Douglas Tennapel, which was introduced by Shiny Entertainment. The sketches were approved, and from that moment David Perry, the leading developer of Shiny Entertainment, and Tennapel began work on the game: the first was responsible for the characters and mechanics of the game, and the second invented, in particular, ideas for levels and developed a game design.

In the original Earthworm JIM, which went on sale in 1994, there was a secret level. Somewhere in the middle of the fifth level of the game was a hidden teleport, jumping to which Jim moved to the secret level of Who Turned Out the Light. The latter included five sub -levels along which the hero moves in the dark, sometimes illuminated by the rays of the spotlights; In addition, Jim’s eyes and red eyes of enemies are noticeable. (By the way, in the version of the game released (ported) Gameloft on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2010, this level was absent.)

In the version of the game for the Sega CD Jima, Donke’s costume was available

In 1995, a special edition of EarthWorm Jim: Special Edition was released for the Sega Mega-CD console. The publication included a lot of funny content, including many costumes available to Jim. The strangest of them was probably the costume of the donke of Kong – a fictional gorilla from the Nintendo universe: this character first appeared in the 1981 Donkey Kong game, where he acted as the main villain.

The Jim Chervyak gained great popularity – and based on the game they decided to remove the animated series, which included two seasons and 23 episodes and was first broadcast in 1995-1996. The series was attended by characters both from the original game and from its sequel. Interestingly, Jima was voiced by Dan Castellnet – an actor, known primarily by the voice acting of Homer Simpson, the hero of the animated series “Simpsons”.

When a new part of the Jim Worm appears, it is unknown

The fourth part of the EarthWorm JIM series was announced by InterPlay Entertainment in 2008. Later, in 2010, however, Tennapel said that the development of the game is not conducted, although as of May 2011 it was still indicated that the project was under development. In 2012, David Perry said that he was convinced of the appearance of the next game about the Jima worm: according to him, the plot could talk about Jim, who retired and strongly turned out, but forced to return the form and start acting again. Since then, however, there have been no details about the future game.
